Meet Emmy. I’ve heard from many people that if a dog don’t chase and bark at animals there is something wrong with their spirit. Some say they’re not whole or serve no purpose. Some say they should be put down. But I ask, “Who are you to know what a dog’s spirit truly is?”

When we took Emmy in, having taken to sitting with the wildlife myself, I fully expected the “new dog” to be chasing all of them away. But that didn’t happen. Not only did she fit in with me, she fit in with the wildlife.

Having been raised around cats, Emmy just did not see any reason to go after small animals. To her it was NATURAL to not chase them. In fact, one early dark morning, Emmy went out to do her business and there was a possum in the bushes beside the patio. Emmy walked out and, without any pause, went over to the possum, sniffed its face out of curiosity, continued out to pee and, then walked back by the possum and into the house.

Emmy loves people and loves children. She never nips, even over the most savory treat. On a walk she will sit down after a while and not go any further if she doesn’t see people. As if saying, “Nobody’s out here. What’s the point?” She will chase the pizza delivery person down the driveway to get a belly rub and then comes back into the house. She lays on her bed on the patio when it’s warm, watching the squirrels go by.

Emmy gives and gets love. She’s not concerned. She gets good food. She fits in with other animals. Why should she chase animals? Dogs like Emmy are companions. I’d even suggest, she has evolved beyond the primitive nature of her kind. If your dog don’t hunt, maybe it needs a family to be a companion for. I mean, all dogs have different personalities.

Dog not right for you? I will again ask, “Who are you to determine what a dog’s proper spirit is?! Let that dog find a good home and go get one that fits in with you. But respect that dog’s right to live. And don’t leave it outside if you care about it.
